A Glimpse into National Donor Sabbath

National Donor Sabbath is a three day observance period that focuses on the intersection between religion and organ donation. Every November, two weekends before Thanksgiving, leaders from a wide range of religions come together to speak out in support of organ donation and attempt to remove the stigma around it. History has shown that the topic of organ donation in relation to religion has never truly been a positive conversation. There is an overwhelming belief that organ donation contradicts religion, so when influential religious leaders speak up in support of the controversial topic, a brand new population is typically reached to advocate for a great cause.

The key to spread awareness about organ donation is education, and this observance period aims to do exactly that. Leaders and organizations are hoping to educate their communities regarding donation of eyes and tissue. As an education-based organization, ODAC stands in solidarity with National Donor Sabbath. We will show our support throughout the three days as we post resources and interviews, such as our interview with Rabbi Perl in which we discuss how Judaism demonstrates support towards the organ donation community. As we find commonality between faiths, we are able to unite and support a cause that can save the lives of many who need the help.
